View the compelling short film, "Why do I love you so much?," which visits a couple who is deeply in love, but have to deal with the demons of various addictions: including the abuse of the highly addictive drug, Heroin. The substance is a semi-synthetic opioid drug synthesized from morphine, a derivative of the opium poppy. There are many famous celebrities and public figures that have used or died from heroin use. The artist Iggy Pop, who is considered an influential innovator of punk rock, hard rock, and other styles of rock music, was also one of the more visible celebrities (alongside Lou Reed and David Bowie) to help establish the romanticization of heroin use, which continues to plague the music industry more than 4 decades later. The English musician, songwriter and founding member of the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards was charged with "possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking," while visiting Canada, in 1977. The charge against Richards was later reduced to "simple possession of heroin." When asked, why Richard's took heroin? He stated "It was a damn good feeling, for starters. And we were going through a lot of stuff. I could operate behind that." Jim Morrison, the lead singer and lyricist of the American band, The Doors, died at age 27 of a drug overdose. Accounts of his death state that Morrison had died of a heroin overdose, having insufflated what he believed to be cocaine. Although the Grateful Dead are strongly associated with psychedelics--especially LSD—Jerry Garcia used heroin on and off throughout most of his adult life. Rocker, Courtney Love revealed that in the 90's, she shot heroin at Charlie Sheen's house in Malibu, California. "My boyfriend at the time took me to this star-studded party with guest that included Tom Cruise and Madonna, and he convinced me to shoot up 'Come on, everyone's doing it.' So that's when my whole heroin drama began," she admitted. Later she married Kurt Cobain, who was an American singer-songwriter, musician and artist, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the grunge band Nirvana. Cobain was a heavy Heroin user, who later committed suicide, in 1994. A high concentration of heroin and traces of Valium were also found in Cobain's body. It's well-known that Elvis Presley took both prescribed and illicit drugs and heroin was something he had also tried. Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday who are jazz and blues musicians and singers are all famous heroin addicts. The actor, comedian, and musician, John Belushi overdosed from a combined injection of cocaine and heroin; known as a speedball. From 1996 through 2001, The American actor, Robert Downey Jr, was arrested numerous times on drug-related charges including cocaine, heroin and marijuana. He went several times through drug treatment programs unsuccessfully, explaining in 1999 to a judge: "It's like I've got a shotgun in my mouth, with my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal." Celebrity socialite Nicole Richie was arrested and charged with possession of Heroin and driving with a suspended license, in 2003. In an interview with Diane Sawyer, the daughter of the famed musical artist Lionel Richie revealed that boredom led to drug use. Some believe that there is a connection between drug use and creativity. Thomas De Quincy, The writer of Confessions of an English Opium Eater was an opium addict for almost fifty years--the William S. Burroughs of his day! Burroughs was the father of the "beat" movement with books like Junkie and The Naked Lunch. Other noted opium, or morphine and methadone users include: Shakespeare, Ben Franklin, Edgar Allen Poe, Tennessee Williams, Scott Fitzgerald, Bela Lugosi "Dracula" ; the prototypical singer/songwriter of the 1970s, James Taylor, along with celebrities Tom Sizemore, Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy), River Phoenix, Sid Vicious, John Candy, Mackenzie Phillips, Mike Starr and comedian Chris Farley.
