The release today (October 4, 2011) of NBA 2k12 got me thinking about the first game in the 2K series, NBA 2K. On the Sega Dreamcast! Man, that game was something else when it came out. Well, it was a game. Nothing else besides that. But it really showed off the power of the console!

In this video I waste your time for 3 minutes showing some terrible gameplay of NBA 2K, along with Visual Concepts' NBA Action 98 on the Saturn. This game was a precursor to NBA 2K, but wow, NBA 2K was a huge upgrade graphically. Really a next-gen looking game at the time. NBA Action 98 is still a good game though.

That's all really. Basketball!

  • Man, I remember seeing the 2k Sports games back in '99 and being absolutely blown away. Never been that much into sports games at all, but I played these on the store displays and they just made me want a Dreamcast even more! Probably my favorite console, next to the Genesis.

  • @phreakindee Oh yeah, the Dreamcast in 1999...that was a good time. For some reason NFL 2K didn't wow me as much as NBA 2K. Which wowed me. A lot.

  • The only basket ball game i care for is NBA Jam but i have to say i really enjoyed this video very informative and interesting,i was upset it ended so early :)

  • @darrenwalshsock Actually, the video went longer than I'd wanted. I just can't be succinct. lol And NBA Jam is great, I have the Jaguar version.

  • anything dc is good

  • Great video about a great game!

My appreciation of NBA 2K the Dreamcast is kind of extra-substantial as I bought it in 1999, but actually played it the first time abt. ten years later when I could re-arrange my DC setup. It was a gratifying moment ... -- and it still is whenever I pop it into the console.

Special thanks for looking back to the predecessor on the Saturn, I wasn't aware of its status to be the legit *forefather*. Will grab that someday, too!

  • @niceandgames Indeed, and that's why it's still in use today :-D

    Kind regards, Ronald.

  • @AlbertFiskpinne Oh, I believe you. :) I checked out some info on the game, looks great. Don't know if I will get the PS1 or N64 version. Probably whichever I come across first I guess.

  • @Quimbyrbg If I had to pick just one console, I would most likely pick the Dreamcast. And I can't believe I didn't say Soul Calibur! I was trying to think of launch titles I had, and somehow that one escaped me. lol

And Sonic Adventure 2 looked incredible, but too bad the gameplay didn't live up to the graphics. At least for me. Just kind of inconsistent.

  • @musicmaniac1965 Glad to hear your DC is still in active use! :) It is a wonderful console.

  • @cityside75 Thanks for watching! Visual Concepts also made NBA Fastbreak 98 on the PlayStation. I don't have that one, but from the looks of it, it seems quite similar to NBA Action 98.

  • @BigDaddyDarth I remember when NHL 2K2 came out...too bad that it was the last officially released game here, but what a great game! I used to love watching the replays of a shot on goal, just to see how well the puck reacted and moved.
