This vid was shot on April 27, 2009 at WWOZ's Piano Night during Jazz Fest in New Orleans. This is the 21st year of Piano Night in New Orleans. Jim plays his version of the orchestral piece written by James P. Johnson and transcribed for solo piano. The stage is one of the live rooms at the House of Blues. You can hear the live band playing in the next room. The Parish room stage is reserved for selected New Orleans pianists on Piano Night.

  • Thanks Dr. I've been enjoying your youtube vids. Hope to work with you in person some time in the near future!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I had never even heard of Mr Hession before I attended this very gig on the WWOZ Piano Night. A masterful performer.

  • Undoubtedly the two were aware of each other's music. Johnson(b.1891) was four years older than Confrey. Both had classical training. Confrey directed his musicianship to some concertizing, but is more well known for his "novelty" piano compositions and method books. Johnson developed his music in the heart of Harlem stride/shout piano, one of the earliest and most difficult jazz styles. Both cut many piano rolls and recordings, but their musical styles, despite similarities, were worlds apart.

  • Thank you.

  • This is a fabulous transcription, Jim, and an excellent performance. I don't get goosebumps often, but you provided a fabulous backdrop for doing so. Not only does this capture the title of the tune but also it captures the essence of James P. Johnson's musical style. Fabulous posting - highly recommended.

  • The last 2 minutes sound very much like the style of the great "Zez Confrey," I wonder if James P. Johnson ever heard Zez play? Or vice versa?
