The Smoking Popes are an American rock group from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1991. They play punk-influenced pop music with crooning vocals. The core of the group is composed of brothers Matt Caterer (born 1968), Josh Caterer (born 1972) and Eli Caterer (born 1975).

@Deevonee they did split but they have since gotten back together and have been together going on almost 7 years now since their hiatus and mike felumlee their drummer was in alkaline trio for a year or two only long enough to record one album with them the trio have had their drummer Derek since '03 he's quite awesome. Just wanted to give you an update on what was happening with both bands

You could really see the Popes were a cocktail of Morrissey-like crooning and punk rock bite, paving the way for a generation of like-minded, dare I say "emo", hybrids.

Looks like the last few posts were a battle of the egos....as a musician myself, i'd say any musician who knows how hard it is, and precise you gotta be to write a good song that flows - (then on top of that make the process seem effortless).....will appreciate how good this band really are. I love em', even though I dont enjoy every song. Shame they split...but then if they didnt split, then the drummer wouldnt have joined The Alkaline Trio...so it depends which way you look at she. Peace out.
