Here's another dime by William Hood.
In fact it's the St. James Infirmary Blues, recorded by Rhythm Willie & his Gang in Chicago. Particularly interesting about this one is that it's played on a Bb harp in Gm, which makes it 4th position. His upper octave work is stunning as usual...
Please enjoy!

  • What happened to the CD of his stuff relased a couple of years back? I've only recently become aware of this guy but I can't find the CD anywhere.

  • @ElComadreja777 search for "the greatest harp player you never heard" (perfectly fitting title) - good luck!

msg me if your search remains unsuccessful :)

  • Nice stuff, what key was that in ?

  • @Thirsty58 absolutely! check the info box for key & position. cheers

  • Wow. This is terrific. I can't believe it has only been viewed 6 times. He's the greatest harp player you never heard.

  • My goodness, at 1:16 I got cold chills. That tears me up. I get a totally different vibe out of it. You can call me crazy but where I come from this sounds like the fiddle method. It sounds like Django Reinhart's man Stéphane Grappelli laying into it. Thanks for another great post

  • stunning

  • It's said he was influenced by Louis Armstrong. Who wouldn't be, of course... but he seems to have a horn-like conception of the harp. What a wonderful player.

  • St Louis Infirmary?

  • He had it going on at the time or he wouldn't be recorded. Maybe he was forgotten because his style harkens to a pre-1940 jazz era. He sounds more like a "Mississippi Clarinet." Anyway, he's very good. Hope many more people listen to this.
