USS Kanawha is a big American fleet oiler that sank during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Now sitting upright near the entrance to Tulagi Harbour in approx 60 metres (200 ft) of water with the decks at an average depth of 45m (160ft). As a warship, it was heavily armed with guns on the bow, bridge, midships and stern.

  • I am doing research for a friend who's Dad was serving aboard the USS Kanawha from 2 Dec 41 to April 43 at the time of her sinking. His name was Mearl J. Orrell. The best I can tell from his journal is that he was a boatswains mate, perhaps a chief or first class from the info written by him. He went on to serve aboard the USS Maryland BB-46 and the USS Pittsburgh CA-72. Thought you might like to know. Thanks for the nice footage.
