Augustana is an American rock band from San Diego, California who are signed to the Epic Records record label and are best known for their singles, 'Boston' and 'Sweet and Low'. In Autumn 2002 at Greenville College in Illinois Dan Layus joined friends together to create music. They began by re-recording 'More than a Love Song' which Dan had written for his high school girlfriend, back then in California. They wanted to call themselves 'The Looking Glass' but changed their mind after finding another band of the same name. They quickly chose the 'Augustana' which Josiah claimed is an African word for monsoon season. It was also the name of Augustana College which frequently traveled to Greenville to compete in sporting events. The original members included Dan Layus, Josiah Rosen, Kyle Baker and Simeon Lohrman. They recorded a full length record, Midwest Skies and Sleepless Mondays in the home recording studio of Jon King. The debut album was released in Spring 2003 and only 1000 copies were produced. Later that year the band recorded Mayfield EP and only 25 copies were made. Dan Layus decided to move back to Southern California with band mate Josiah Rosen, where they eventually found their drummer, Justin South. The band found fame with their second album, All the Stars and Boulevards, which sold 300,000 copies in the United States, including over 1,000,000 singles of 'Boston'.
