It's not hard to believe at all. Who else is going to be playing the bass or the timpani or the other percussions? just search up some of the better Kid's Orchestras. A good place to find good Kids orchestras that rival College Orchestra's is Japanese Elementary Orchestras

No. when playing a piece like that, you would want to recheck the tuning between movements. putting that much tension on the instrument would cause some strings to go out sometimes.

I'd like to correct my own comment. I have found music pieces with double bass sounding amazing. I think it might just be this performance that didn't really do it for me.

I enjoy watching bass players like this shred like this because people say bass guitar doesn't need to play fast and cant be a melody instrument. If a person with a giant wooden guitar can do it, someone with a bass guitar can do it.
