The M56 mine system is a helicopter delivered anti-tank (AT) mine with a factory set self-destruct time. One helicopter can carry two dispensers with 40 mines per
dispenser. One sortie can create a minefield 400M X 40M. The M56 AT pressure-fuzed mine is a longitudinally split half-cylinder 10.38 inches long by 4.63 inches in
diameter. The AT mine is a highly effective track-breaker, weighing 5.9 pounds and has an electrical/mechanical pressure fuse.

The M56 is composed of two SUU-13D/A dispensers on the M156 Universal Mount. The explosive filling, Composition H6, weighs 1.4 kg.

Once the mine is launched by a small propellant charge downwards from the dispenser at 4.6 m/s, the initial arming is achieved. The four spring-folded fins open to increase the frictional drag of the mine and slow it down to minimize the impact force. They also orientate the mine in flight so that it strikes the ground
