New to contracting...?

Contracting for the first time can be a daunting experience but with the correct knowledge and guidance, it can provide a flexible solution for those looking for shorter-term employment.

Some key things to take into consideration are as follows:

What is contracting?
Contracting is an alternative option to permanent employment
As with temping work, Contractors can be employed on a fixed-term or ongoing basis
Why do companies employ Contractors?
To cover periods of absence of permanent staff for example, maternity leave
To obtain assistance with specific projects or during particularly busy times
To gain an insight to a candidate's skills and experience prior to offering a permanent role
What are the benefits of contracting?
Increased flexibility - you decide when and where you would like to work in order to suit your own personal circumstances
Option to choose whether you want to work via a limited company, umbrella company or directly through an agency
Ability to work within a variety of industries and cultures with exposure to different types of management styles and clients
Greater control over the type of work/projects you would like to be involved in
Increased earning potential - Contractors are often paid significantly more than permanent employees in the same field
Opportunity to further develop skills by working in multiple contract positions
Can help enhance CV and can offer greater flexibility in career progression
Option of paid overtime and the opportunity to benefit from extended holiday periods
Can often lead to an offer of permanent employment
Other things to consider
Contractors are normally expected to organise their own training at their own expense - keeping skills updated is vital in securing future contracts
It is important to have solid work experience because contracting is unlike permanent employment in that you don't have the luxury of being given time to settle into your new role
If you are working in the UK for the first time, a P46 should be completed and a National Insurance number should to be obtained
If you are a not a British, EC or EEA national, you must have a valid UK Visa
When choosing an umbrella company, it is important to ensure they are fully Inland Revenue compliant in order to avoid any problems in the future
Contracting can sometimes mean commuting long distances or relocating for periods of time
There can be unplanned breaks between assignments with no income
