Ironclad by Saurus for the Neo Geo system. This horizontally scrolling shooter was originally only released for the Neo Geo CD system but in 2009 was also released for the Wii Virtual Console. The game features a choice of three different craft: scout, fighter and bomber. Your craft has a pod attached to it which can be used in various different ways as shown in the video.

One really cool thing about the game is that there are various different routes through the game which you can choose including even multiple different final stages each with their own unique boss. Ironclad is a very good shooter well worth checking out. The game is known in Japan as Chotetsu Brikin'ger. This is being played with Nebula on a PC using an actual original Neo Geo CD copy of the game. Unfortunately the intro got a bit messed up in the recording but at least you can hear the cool intro music.

  • Which region Neo Geo CD are you playing on?

I had never seen THAT Neo Geo CD startup until now!

  • I'm playing this on an emulator (Nebula) rather than a console and am using an actual original Neo Geo CD copy of the game.

  • Nice video showing off the game. Thanks for the contribution.

  • Glad you found it of interest! There was hardly any footage of the game on youtube so I felt it was important to show some gameplay. Noel3200 put up a really nice review of this game a few weeks before I uploaded this video.

  • Very interesting looking R-Type variant, very lush graphics too! What begs me to ask though, is the spherical power meter on the HUD: Is that the assist's charge or its life meter? Does the assist get upgrades like R-Type as well? And what does the R and the L on the HUD stand for?

It would be lovely to see a full playthrough of this; if only to see the game mechanics in action more.

  • You can hold a button down to charge up the assist and when charged you can fire it at the enemy. The spherical power meter on the far left shows the charging up of the assist. After I got that power up at 1:55 the shooting pattern of the assist changed making it more effective I think.

The 'L' and 'R' on the Hud are lit if you get L/R arm power ups. They seem to indicate if you can use your bomb attack like I did at 8:43 The meter above your lifebar indicates how powered up your weapon is.

  • That's a very unique perspective for this style of game.

  • Enough is Enough! That's a thinking we have to have now! That's a slogan of Victory!

  • wow i never heard of this shmup, it looks extremly interesting!

  • @ineedapizza which religion neo geo ?

  • @Radwar99

Well technically you can say that for any game on VC. Some people (life myself) enjoy playing games on a television rather than the PC for nostalgia purposes.

  • @mailanbr I don't know, from what I read somewhere, I think it was dumped from a Wii CD. On the other hand, I don't really care if it's on VC, my point was that the roms of the Wii version are available and the game is emulated on the PC.

  • @Radwar99

Well, if the Wii version was "dumped," how come it was put on VC? That is my point.

  • @mailanbr The Wii version has already been dumped for some time and has been playable on PC some emulators since that time. So what's your point.

  • The neo geo cd versions of the cartridge games contain music that is either better than, as good as, or worse than the originals. I liked the arranged intros of KOF 94, KOF 96, KOF 98, KOF 99. The arranged drums for the KOF 95 and 97 intros just don't cut it for those intros.

Having viewed the AES prototype, I can safely say the NEOGEO CD audio of Iron Clad beats out the cartridge version. The cartridge version needs a better synth lead.
