Camshaft position sensor replacement. It controls the vanos solenoid. When this part fails you will feel jumping in your pickup. This part is fairly simple to replace. You will need to remove the Vanos solenoid; A large wrench or channel locks should do the trick. Unplug it, remove it along with the pcv hose. Then remove the oil fiter cap and oil hose bolt. Be careful not to lose the washer. Then remove the screw holding in the camshaft position sensor. I used a t30 socket. But it was fastened with an Allen screw 5mm. The plug for the sensor is in the under the middle of the manifold hanging there loosely by where the pcv valve assembly is. To assemble reverse what you did. Should take about 20 minutes to an hour depending on your experience.

If this part was faulty you will feel an immediate difference in pick up. Especially on the low end torque. I no longer need to dump my clutch to do massive burn outs. Thats it the difference i felt.

All the work done on my car cost me very little. But the result is better than some who have spent thousands to get half what I have making my own parts.

For instance the motor mounts are to soft to do anything crazy, so I used a deep well socket and some sway bar bushings and a long nut and bolt with washers to replace the soft mounts after I had broken some expensive mounts. I decide metal it the only thing that can handle the torque. Vibration and noise has increased as a side effect of this. I probably will never do a vid on this.

  • Wow 26 thumbs down. Not much love here? Maybe I should remove it this, I have noticed it is better to not help people because the will always find fault in something. It is why i have not posted any new vids for a while now.

  • I have 2003 z4 and error code P0340 and P1338. Any idea how to locate both cps sensors for Z4? Thanks.

  • @kongfuwang Go to rockauto.com for the sensors. The link should be in my description. It is an easy to use site and an awesome place for parts.

  • hey i got a 2000 bmw 323ci . and i got my check engine light checked and its tellin me my camshaft position sensor bank 1 is bad. is this the bank one you just did or is that somewhere else. my car sometimes takes like 2 seconds to start usually its starts in a sec. and sometimes when the check engine light is on it stalls a lot. i need help lol

  • @DKSALMAN This is bank 1. Change it out, you will feel like you got a new car.

  • Can u get to this sensor from the bottom? I have a 03 and I droped the socket and it fell in this plastic gaurd under the engine. Once I took it off I could see what looked like to be the same pigtail from the sensor. But could reach up and pull it out with no problems???

  • @ericdraven01nc There is more than one way to do things. I did not want to remove the vanos solenoid. I do not see a way around that. As for as the connectors, I don't see why you couldn't get it from the bottom if you wanted to. I did it by feel for the most part, plus i know how the connector works. Take not of the metal clip.

  • nice video, there should be two washer on the oil hose going to the vanos on top and one bottom, also the camshaft positioning sensor usually throws a code for the MAF when it fails, 90% of replacement sensors are faulty and too short, they don't go in the cylinder head all the way and don't read the camshaft wheel so they throw a code, i had to cut the ridge near the aluminium bracket out so the sensor slides all the way in, the aluminium frame should be flush with the cyl head!

  • Mr. benton386. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE TIME YOU TOOK TO EXPLAIN AND MAKE THIS VIDEO! you have helped so many people around the world in changing this part! I am one of them. I watched the video a few times and it helped alot. Many thanks!

  • is this the same for a 97 bmw 7 series

  • nice one mate, thanks for uploading this. always thought it would be a lot harder than this to replace it, but seems fairly straight forward.
