@fogwat, in general we should puch more people into 'user pays' programs. I think this can be done with tax incentives. Maybe give tax breaks to people who opt out of Medicare for treatment up to a certain $ figure.

It's just plain rediculous to see $150,000 BMWs parked at public hospitals, with people waiting 6 hours to get it.

@LibertyDownUnder i think the word limit here prevents me from giving a proper clarification - suffice to say I agree with your thesis viz the Australian Health system. I am just postulating that there are supply side issues with healthcare that might potentially sabotage any more clever way of funding it that you might devise.

The Doctor shortage in Australia is mostly due to medical associations restricting entry to universities, and poor management by Government run hospitals.

@LibertyDownUnder wouldn't that be another potential distortion? We could also focus on alternative means of healthcare provision - I know in Australia that the supply of Doctors is another issue -> we could produce more doctors and funnel them into alternative organisations similar to the fraternal societies.

I think Libertarians should concede that a complete separation of health & state is politically impossible these days, and that a compromise should be reached.

Pushing people towards high deductible, low premium insurance is a great step forward, and Govenrment can step in & help the poor with FUNDING ONLY, which won't distort the whole market.
