A clip from a 1967 interview, in which, pressed to put down The Monkees (yawn...), Jerry mans up and, like most musicians at the time, gives them props. Really, it was only journalists who hated the Monkees. Everyone from The Beatles and The Who to Buffalo Springfield and Frank Zappa gave much support to The Monkees.

  • This is a great find, sittingnextto, thank you so much for posting it -- both for its historical value, and for another few data points showing Jerry to have been a genuinely fine human being, as well as a musical genius.

But people, PLEEZ tell me I'm neither the first nor the only person to have thought the page title meant Jerry had somehow gotten into a camera shot on The Monkees teevee show?!

  • @smartalek180 Ha! I hadn't thought of the potentially deceptive wording. Well, if Nesmith invited Frank Zappa and Dolenz invited Tim Buckley on the second season, Jerry might well have ended up cavorting with Peter if they'd done a third season.

  • Jerry was sharp as a tack, and he knew the instant the question was asked where the "journalist" was trying to lead the conversation.

He was also very kind, and he had no reason to put down the Monkees.

Cool interview -- thanks for uploading!

  • @0428mar remember watching Tedesco with 'Happy Kine and the Mirthmakers' on the all-time classic 'Fernwood 2nite' TV show

  • The Wrecking Crew son!!!! Earl Palmer,Hal Blaine,Tommy Tedesco,Don Randi,Leon Russell,Barney Kessell,Howard Roberts,Bill Pitman,Glenn Campell,ect,ect,ect.The list goes on and on.Thats who played on these records.And a shit load of others.Look 'em up.

  • 'Journolists,' rock, main-stream or otherwise were dishonest s#!t then and they've only gotten worse. Thanks for Jerry...

  • I had no use for the Monkees, but I thought Head was one of the greatest movies to come out of the Sixties, next to Dr. Strangelove and 2001 ASO.

  • Frank Zappa was a big fan of the Monkees. In fact, in addition to appearing on their show, he supposedly offered Mickey Dolenz a job as drummer in his band.

  • Ok now I really have to listen to some Monkee songs . I Like them but it was not on my schedule until I saw this. :-)

  • I always like the Monkees and the Grateful Dead. Good music is good music. They were all supportive of each other plus they were all very funny.

  • @smartalek180 I thought the same thing. Both meanings occurred to me, but I was hoping for that one!

  • @smartalek180 & sittingnextto: I too thought "Jerry was on The Monkees TV Show? This I've got to see ..." but I was not overly disappointed - thanks for uploading it, sittingnextto

  • They were all whores, even Stephen Stills was desparate to become a Monkey, now in retrospect, these were cool pop songs,I own 'm now,(to ease my bouts of depression)but at the time, who in his fucking right mind would be prepared to lay good money down, for that manifactured dross, when you had Stones & Beatles ,not to mention the rest of the British invasion and emerging psychedelic legends.Paul Rever & the Raiders, now there I did spend some money on.
