Help us purchase a hybrid truck to rescue excess food to deliver to Toronto's hungry.
Second Harvest's current fleet of 7 refrigerated trucks is at the heart of an operation that delivers 15,000 meals a day to over 200 social service agencies in Toronto. These agencies provide food to children in need, the working poor, seniors on fixed incomes, women fleeing domestic abuse, homeless people, psychiatric patients and thousands of others who have fallen on hard times.
Due to the 2008 financial crisis the demand for food in Toronto has increased by approximately 20% and our agency partners predict that this level of demand will continue to grow.
The purchase of a hybrid truck will allow us to pick up more food while making a serious commitment to a sustainable environment by "greening" our fleet of trucks.
By diverting over 6 million lbs of food from landfill in 2009, we prevented over 1 million lbs of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. The purchase of our first hybrid truck will allow us to continue to positively impact the environment.
