The Medicine Wheel symbolizes balance in all areas of life. Using the Medicine Wheel (or Sacred Hoop), Lakota Elder Larry Salway will show us that when the Wheel is broken, quality of life declines; when it is whole and in balance, life becomes fulfilling.

Larry Salway grew up on the Rosebud Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. He rose out of the poverty of his childhood and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and later, a professor at the Oglala Lakota College campuses in Kyle and Rapid City, SD. He served for five years as Tribal Judge in Pine Ridge, SD. Mr. Salway has also served as pastor of churches in Arizona and South Dakota. Larry is Co-President of Life Initiatives.

This video is part of a series Life Initiatives produced for mentor development.

  • Dear friend, grasscat1977; we have no great need of "organized religion", but we have great need to know the True Creator through his Son, Chief Cornerstone, Jesus. If older stories are more dependable, then let us not stop at 10,000 years ago. The Truth is found at the beginning of time. We need neither pastor nor priest, but we do need a great Mediator to pick us up with the Wind of his Spirit and carry us, cleansed, to Creator.

  • WONDERFUL..AND PILAMAYA..<3

  • You just spoke of 500 yrs of opression..Hmmm. You have a been done wrong and waiting for the creator to right it point of view?

That is not what the 12 steps or GOD is about. Your own history is of war and defense. You easily overlook that. I was very interested in this. It looks like we are going to have to wait for another generation for peace and a true message.

Keep trying and God blees us ALL.....Or none of us!!!

  • aren't the Medicine wheels just "ADOPTED" by more recent Amerindian cultures? they are in fact of unknown purpose before that... more recent cultures, as the developed and spread, just adopted them! they are sometimes 10,000 years old. Some of them have skeletons in the middle, but the skeleton, unlike the Medicine Wheel itself, is of more recent origin, so used by recent Natives or even European settlers!!

  • I was given a great gift of a book written by a man who lived in a cave.It tells of the lessons of the wheel and the gifts of the 4 directions.I never met the man but i think he must have known that book would end up in the right hands. It's the True Bible.

I see no evidence of organised religion being anything but pure horseshit. The truth of the Wheel is easy to see and understand, and we don't need a priest, pastor,or nun to let us know what to believe.

  • These are the scared teaching of all mankind... beautifully presented.

  • This wise man speaks not from the teeth but from his heart. Thank you Cary for sharing this.

  • your awesome thank you.!!
