This is the epitome of the funk sound of 1981-1982. The vocoder gets me every time, the rhythm guitar riffing, the interaction between Vernon and the backing vocalists... It's just ..wow! Perfection without sounding clean or polished. To me, this is as funky as something can possible be without being hazardous to your health (and this one comes close to causing a serious funk attack that requires mouth to mouth resuscitation). When I heard this in 1982, I swear everything went black before my eyes! :)
From Vernon's fourth album "Playing Hard To Get", which was issued in 1982 on the independent label SRI (Spector Records International).
"The Top Secret Production Staff," according to the liner notes were:
Vernon Burch (lead vocals, guitar, percussion)
Ready Freddy Washington (bass)
William "Snoopy" Bryant (all keyboards)
Melvin "Fatburger" Webb (drums and percussion)
Horns: Rusty Crutcher, Jim Reeves and Bill Armstrong
Background vocals:
The Waters, Maxine Willard, Julia Tillman, Oren Waters and Luther Waters.
Produced, written and arranged by Vernon Burch for Ziponki Enterprises and So/Bur Productions.
Guitarist, keyboard player, percussionist, singer, songwriter, producer and now also Reverend, Vernon Burch is for some unknown reason one of D.C.'s best kept secrets. A former member of the Bar-Kays and with a handful of excellent albums in his own name, Vernon's name should be up there with the other Funk legends of the 70's and early 80's.
Fantastic upload.... i so love this tune !!
