Gimli's continued "foot" training -- she's getting better! I've slowed down one "foot-giving" so you can see better what's actually going on because she's so quick(!)

Note that I am simply ignoring her little bites (no click and reward for unwanted behaviour) and then rewarding her for satisfactory "foot-giving". At the end I give her an extra "jackpot" seed to end the session on a good note (before she gets bored).

For the people that haven't read previous posts: Gimli is an approx 12 year old Red Rumped Parrot/Parakeet that I started clicker training/training with positive reinforcement approx 4 months ago. At that point she was completely hand-shy. She has had considerable progress!

Additionally her confidence has grown, and she seems like a much happier and livelier bird -- not that she was miserable before, it's just that she interacts a lot more with us now.

The training has also helped bring out her personality a lot more -- so if anyone out there is wondering -- I say give clicker training a go! It is so much more than "just trick training"! Your pet(s) will thank you for it - because it's fun!

  • I had a pair of red-rumps, but female died after 1 1/2 months.. But male still can't get used to humans, and is scarried of my hands, lol xD idk why... Mb any1 can give a tip?

  • @iMPRE7ed Sorry to hear that the female died. I really reccomend clicker training, Gimli responded really well to it :) (I had tried other ways before but it didn't work). Do a search for "Building Trust With Your Bird" on You Tube. I followed the advice there for my first steps on getting Gimli tame. Don't hesitate to ask more questions. Good luck!

  • What kind of parrot is this? a red-rumped female parrot?

  • Yes, you're right. It's a female red-rumped parrot (also known as grass parrot)

  • is this also one step going to step up training? i mean that she will go to your hand?

  • Yes it is, I am hoping that eventually she will "like" touching my finger enough to actually sit on it. But this step is taking quite a while since she is really easily spooked (the transition from giving mer her foot to her actually sitting om my finger).

  • Your pet is so cute and very talented.. Nice!

  • pretty bird- i really like the color

  • one time i opened my cage, put my finger there and my bird automaticly put his foot on my finger! Now i keep the cage open 24/7

  • Hehe, thanks. She is a really sweet little birdie.

No and yes. Technically a budgerigar is a type of parakeet. A parakeet is a collective name for small to medium sized parrots with long tails (I think, you may have to check the accuracy of this - but it's waht I think).
