http://www.ted.com Sure, the web connects the globe, but most of us end up hearing mainly from people just like ourselves. Blogger and technologist Ethan Zuckerman wants to help share the stories of the whole wide world. He talks about clever strategies to open up your Twitter world and read the news in languages you don't even know.

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate. Watch a highlight reel of the Top 10 TEDTalks at http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/top10

  • He looks like Ben Franklin. He's got my vote.

  • It would actually be cool if people just learned Esperanto. Then, every website could be in its native language and esperanto. It would make things simpler, cheaper and people wouldn't have to waste so much time translating stuff into so many different languages. I suggest Esperanto not only because its neutral (not a national language), but also because it has a logical grammar and can be learned in 6 months. Whereas national languages take many years. Nice idea. Great bridge language.

  • So glad to hear this talk! The US is remarkably provincial in it's media outlook. It's horrible! I am american and I feel stranded on a delusional island most of the time. Our American arrogance is a giant problem and it's made worse instead of better by the media. We are not stupid, we are isolated and ignorant. As pathetic as it sounds it's true.

  • and then you watch this, youtube

New York Times Hoax - The Yes Men Fix The World

  • There is a bias in WHICH Wikipedia? Did you combine all the languages of Wikipedia before running the query?

That said, Global Voices is awesome and I've been reading it for years.
