A learners tutorial on how to model a basic WWII German Helmet in 3ds Max
[[Not Featured in Video] If you have adjusted your units, please go to customise then units set-up first to use generic units]

1) Create a Box with the parameters: Length 50, Height 50 and Width 50, all with 4 segments - Now press F4 to view edged faces.

2) Select the box then go to the modifiers panel and choose the 'Spherify' modifier

3) Now right click on the sphere we created and choose convert to, then select editable poly.

4) Now choose the select polygon tool, select the lower half polygons and delete them

5) now choose the select Vertices tool then choose soft selection (on The polygon modelling ribbon) and select the back two vertices and move them downwards and slightly outwards.

6) Now unselect soft selection (polygon modelling ribbon) and choose select by edge

7) Select edit (Polygon Modelling ribbon) and swift loop, add 1 loop above the first polygon, now add another just slightly above that one.

8) Now choose the select edge tool, select one of the bottom edges, whilst it is still selected go to modify selection (Polygon Modelling Ribbon) and select loop, it should have selected all the bottom edges. Now hold Ctrl and select the Polygon selection tool. All the polygons connected to the selected edges should be selected, now go to polygon (polygon modelling ribbon) hold shift and click extrude. Now on the options that you have, change the value to '1' then select 'local norm' then press okay.

9) Now go to edit (Polygon Modelling Ribbon) and select ' Use NURMS' and on the Use NURMS tab (Polygon Modelling Ribbon) deselect the show-cage, and change the iterations to 2
10) Now select the helmet and right click, then select convert to followed by Editable Mesh.

A: Go to Customise, select show UI then select Show Ribbon

  • I created a Box, 50x50x50 and tried to spherify it, but it only became a smaller box. I don't see the 'checkered' look on the box. Is this the problem?

  • @blessconfessunless I think I know the problem, the cube needs to have 4 width. length and height segments. As the spherify modifier can only spherify the polygons. A sphere with 6 polygons is a cube, thats why we increase the segments :)

  • Doesnt look like a German helmet. An EAST German helmet? Maybe, but not a WWII one.

  • sphere = cube ****

  • Correction, I cannot see multiple polygons on the sphere. Only six flat sides.
