@sm1thsisdead regardless of the fact that this might not have been a joke, i sincerely doubt mr. merritt was being serious when he said that... i think people might be missing his humor here.

I already knew about that. He wore earplugs at the concert I saw a couple of years ago. It sounds absolutely miserable :(

Can the audience stop giggling like idiots so we can actually listen to Merritt and Gonson singing?
I find it ironic that a lot of these Magnetic Fields fans would never get caught dead at a Katy Perry concert, but now that the MF's are covering a Katy Perry song, they giggle and laugh at how funny Perry's lyrics can be.

Well, the thing is most of the acts add humor to their performances, so I think the audiences for OUR HIT PARADE shows are sort of primed up for comedy with the music.
