Illustrations by N.C. Wyeth for Jane Porter's novel, The Scottish Chiefs.
The Scottish Chiefs is a romantic narrative of the life of William Wallace. First published in 1809, it was exceedingly popular with readers throughout Europe. The Scottish Chiefs was republished in 1921, including N. C. Wyeth's powerful illustrations.
Born in 1882, N. C. Wyeth was one of the America's greatest and most beloved illustrators of fictional literature. His gripping illustrations bring to life many treasured classics by renowned authors.
Long before "Classics Illustrated", Wyeth's wonderful pictures encouraged youngsters to test their reading skills on real books. I know of at least one family where the parent, a single mother, gathered her children together after dinner to share a chapter of one or another of the black-bound Scribner's classics. Their favorites were, I think, the Robert Louis Stevenson volumes. Thanks, Defiance.
