This is a video in which Angela demonstrates how to integrate comprehension with decoding the SPELD SA Phonic Books.
To ensure students are able to read a text independently, they should make no more than one error per ten words. To prepare a child for success, go to the pages on the inside covers.
1. check the student knows the sounds included in the text
2. demonstrate how to blend the sounds in one of the longer regularly spelt words
3. read the tricky words with them one by one
4. read the choice of activities to yourself.
As you will see Angela asks questions, as the student reads, to engage them with the text and to hold their interest. You can include the questions where you prefer: before reading the text, during or at the end.
Please send us your feedback.

Apart from practising holding the camera still, can you suggest ways of improving this tool?
