The 14th grand prix of the season takes us to Asia, or more precisely to the city state of Singapore. The special feature here is that for the second time in the history of Formula One the race is being staged at night. A spectacle thats looked forward to by spectators and drivers alike.
Even as they enter turn 1 the drivers need to be fully alert: as it is the first good chance to overtake. The circuit is a good 5 kilometres long and weaves around Marina Bay in the south of Singapore. The cars go anti-clockwise, with night being turned into day at least as far as lighting is concerned!
Thats because the night in Singapore will be lit up by 3,000 lux.
Around 1,500 light projectors provide the required illumination right across the huge city. A clear view, therefore, for the drivers and for the 100,000 plus spectators at the track.
The organisers have also ensured there are plenty of run-off zones. The route goes right across the man-made harbour and back again into the citys entertainment district. Then at top speed towards the Esplanade Theatre, only to brake back down just after it to under a hundred km/h.Like Monte Carlo and Valencia, Singapore is a typical street circuit. 90-degree turns and top speeds of 300 km/h - a tough test for brakes and tyres.
One key point is the last corner before the start/finish line as the cars race past the worlds highest Ferris wheel and at top speed onto the straight.
All of this another 60 times - then the chequered flag comes down.
