Land Grab - Zimbabwe

President Mugabe wanted to take back 1/3 of all Zimbabwe's productive farmland from white farmers and give it to the country's peasants. In 1998, a mere 4,500 wealthy whites owned a staggering 50% of Zimbabwe, and Mugabe says they had until August that year to give that land back.

As Europe sats down with African leaders in Cairo in March 1998, Zimbabwe's colonial hangover will be taking centre stage. Land was an issue throughout Zimbabwe's rocky transition to Independence. But when it came, Mugabe was generous to the whites - allowing them to stay on. Indeed it was his anti-racism policies that won him favour. Now many feel he is trying to divert criticism about corruption in government by pushing through land reform that will see black farmers re-settled onto land seized by the British colonialists. The whites say it's State-sanctioned robbery - but the government says that's exactly what the white man did.

So, the strongest man out of the tribe fashioned a makeshift crown out of twigs and grasses and self appointed himself the King of that tribe. Small peasents can t manage huge farms....why destroy an infrastructure for empty words. Most victims of of Mugabe are other black zimbawians not whites.

@TheDerickh Mugabe is one of the few who stands up for his people and the region. This is a trickled down effect since independence..Uk and Us didn't hold their end of the bargain when Zim got independence..Zim played by the rules and the whites were let down by UK...not Zim. Everyone was aware that the land will be seized...it was a matter of time. I have plenty White friends frm Zim. None of this is their fault nor the govt but the West...it's a shame how media taints the truth.

@ukusapillage it's not the land grab that crippled Zim.it's the sanctions placed on the country, add the drought that affected the region even other countries struggled and they didn't have sanctions imposed of them.At first sight it seems like Mugabe is a mad man.with further inspection you truly see the card the west played.When you read up n the history and what happened during the independence you will understand what really happened and the "agreements" reached by the british, US and Zim.

I've lived in difference countries with different peoples, including Zimbabwe, we all need to THINK very long and hard because there are good and bad everywhere, most people are mainly just trying to get by, help friends and family and the last thing they're looking for is conflict, there are enough difficulties in life without adding to them..don't be swayed by extreme views from a few individuals who don't represent the majority!! God is watching!!! I had to almost die to learn some of this..!

PLEASE realise that MOST Zimbabweans just want to raise their families in PEACE NOT CONFLICT, don't listen to evil, don't you know that your words can result in the pain & death of others!!
