VoltaicHD is great, but I'm using it on Windows though. I bought a copy and I've been using it for a while to convert my Sony HDR-SR12 1080i files into AVI so there won't really be any quality loss and then I edit them in VirtualDub. The combination of VoltaicHD and VirtualDub is one of the best editing combos in Windows for HD content.
VoltaicHD is well worth the low price they ask for it, and then some. Yes, it takes some time to convert even on a fast system, but it's worth the wait.

VoltaicHD is better for those who just want a conversion and editing is not prime intention. But otherwise, I feel best with Sony Vegas, specially with the new version 9a & with the latest DivX codec. After trying many software I finally settled down with Vegas.

NO MORE TRANSCODING NEEDED ANYMORE. Now YouTube allows uploading of m2ts & mts files.

How long did the conversion process take (X*Playtime) and which format did Voltaic convert to?
Is there A way to get VoltaicHD for free ?

VoltaicHD is $34.99US usually. We do provide the occasional free copy to budding filmmakers ;)

With VoltaicHD, not only conversion takes 10x of playback time, but also makes the output size much bigger than original.

Conversion from AVCHD to Apple Intermediate Codec results in file sizes up to 10x the original. Unfortunately this is just the way it is. AVCHD is highly compressed and AIC is not (which makes for easier editing).

Its good that YouTube and others (like Vimeo - far better for HD video) allow AVCHD uploading, but its unlikely that you would ever upload an AVCHD clip without editing it first.
VoltaicHD is all about conversion of AVCHD files for editing, not just so that you can upload.

The conversion takes about 10x playback. This is very slow, but we are working on a new conversion process which will be much faster.
Output format is Apple Internmediate Codec (AIC) on the Mac or AVI and WMV on the PC.
