One of the central figures of Conceptual art, Lawrence Weiner's work is the currently the subject of a major retrospective at MOCA in Los Angeles entitled As Far As The Eye Can See. Other recent solo exhibitions of his work have been mounted at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (1990), Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (1991), Dia Center for the Arts, New York (1991), Musée d'Art Contemporain, Bordeaux (1991 and 1992), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1992), Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1994), Philadelphia Museum of Art (1994), and Museum Ludwig, Cologne (1995). In addition to publishing numerous books, Weiner has produced various films and videos, including Beached (1970), Do You Believe in Water? (1976), and Plowman's Lunch (1982).

This episode of Design Matters is a very special treat: the interview is conducted in-person, filmed earlier this month in Mr. Weiner's studio in Greenwich Village. And I am truly thrilled to announce that the extraordinary and brilliant Hillman Curtis directed and co-produced the film. I hope you enjoy it.

  • This is me being hypocritical, because I enjoy these types of films as much as the next designer. I'm very interested in Lawrence has to say, he is a man with a lot of experience and valuable information for young designers. But it seems to me that what he is saying, is that everyone designs, all day whether we know it or not. Designers already understand this (that's why we do what we do) but the information is most valuable to an audience that isn't receiving it.

  • This is SO beautiful. Who directed this?

  • Hmm I have to agree Brian.. refreshingly pure thoughts and words. Let's try to not pollute them with pretentious comments and assumptions.

    And what's wrong with dogma? Everything is guided by some sort of underlying dogma.. even if it is never apparent. Please leave your overblown comments for your museum dates - I'm sure you can find some hungry art student to impress (;

  • Yes! This is a heavy video! It gives me chills as well!

  • This video actually gave me chills. Profound, but not pretentious. Lawrence expounds his philosophy so purely an unapologetically, but without dogma. And your neutral, unimposing inquisitiveness let's him be that - totally unique. Just Awesome with a capital 'A'.
