Presented by Alan Waplington this Granada schools series was made in the mid 70's but ran until ITV schools finished in 1993! Each programme lasted only 14 minutes and there were only about 15 programmes ever made! This clip fromj 1982.
That church in Winwick though is hundreds of years old and still has musket ball holes from the Civil War when Cromwells Army fought there. There is a school in between Winwick and Newton called Redbank which is named after a famous battle where the 4,000 Scots were massacred....they said the river ran red with their blood !
The programme was made during the mid 1970's, however, it was more than likely still being transmitted during 1984.

@EVERTONIC
I remember that too, he went to Prince Ruperts Tower in Everton which is the Everton FC club emblem.

Alan Waplington was a former Headmaster of mine at Abraham Guest High School in Wigan. An inspiration, sorely missed.

I was taught by Alan Waplington at Kingswood too - he was the best teacher there by far and inspired me to be a history teacher too.
A genuinely lovely guy!!
