Each week thousands of live cattle undertake a three week journey from the Amazon port of Belem in Brazil to Beirut in Lebanon.
Cattle are crammed into trucks in the burning Amazon heat. For four days they will be unable to move or lay down and will receive no food or water. Those that fall are trapped and injured. At the ship, the use of electric prods for loading further distresses the weakened cattle. Crushed against unfamiliar animals, the cattle can injure each other in their agitation. Heat stroke, trauma and respiratory disease will all be killers on the seventeen day voyage.
On arrival in Lebanon, cattle are often slaughtered in inhumane ways that violate religious requirements. After weeks of needless animal suffering the consumer is misled into believing the meat is Halal. Humane slaughter close to home, would not only end the cruelty, it would create jobs in Brazil.
Why is it not cheaper to ship corn to lebanon and raise cattle there? This transportation looks very inefficient 8-10% losses and very small ship, which can carry only small amout of cattle. Why they don´t transport brazilian corn to lebanon in suezmax bulk carrier or use bigger cattle ship?

there is another solution. Dissolve the state of lebanon. God did not make limits. men did, besides you can eat fish and vegetables. why do u hve to carry heavy animals ll the way to lebanon from brazil?? that doesnt make any sense to me. send it to Angola! Straight line traject, you have the choice: boat or plane. im surpprized these animals reach alive in lebanon

Very strict Muslims will not accept the inability to know who is slaugthering the animal and if it is really Halal. I say Lebanon needs to find more local meat source. Import the cattle to raise them and breed them in the area for local consumption. Those Zebus are a tough breed and can be raised in many places. If grass is a problem raise them in Turkey and in grassy areas in Lebanon and Syria. It would create a great industry for Muslims in fertile areas like Bosnia or even the Sawhili coast

Well the way so called halal meat is raised in the states is not halal either. What I want to know is why they can't raise their own cattle? or have Turkey or Egypt raise the animals?
