Patanjali provides a definition of practice
tatra sthitau yatnah abhyasa
Practice is the endeavor towards steady tranquility
Yoga Sutra 1.14:
Patanjali outlines three requirements for practice
sah tu dirgha kala nairantarya satkara asevito drdha bhumih
sah tu = that (practice) however
dirgha kala = (must be done for) a long time
nairantarya = continuously, without interruption
satkara = (with) respect, devotion, adoration
asevitah = pursued assiduously, completely
drdha-bhumih = (becomes) firm of ground
