Butler is one of the reasons I read SF. She never TRIES to make you feel one way or the other, she just does and powerfully so. I hate that non-SF readers think the genre is all about space adventures and aliens. Parable of the Sower was better than The Road.
Ursula K. Le Guin, Connie Willis, Nancy Kress... WHY don't more women read SF? Even the stuff written by dudes these days tend to be full of strong yet believable female characters, more so than most genres. Gibson's Cayce Pollard ruled.
