"You Can't Always Get What You Want" is a song by the Rolling Stones released on their 1969 album Let It Bleed. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, it was named as the 100th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone in its 2004 list of "500 Greatest Songs of All Time." In a 2003 interview, Mick Jagger said he had an "idea of having a choir, probably a gospel choir, on the track, but there wasn't one around at that point. Jack Nitzsche, or somebody, said that we could get the London Bach Choir and we said, 'That will be a laugh.'"

Scala performs this on a "De Laatste Show" - a late night talk show in Belgium similar to those in the United States. The singer is Patrick Riguelle, leader of the "De Laatste Showband." It's rare to see a live Scala performance in their "street" clothes. Enjoy!

-- Lyrics --

I saw her today at a reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"
Sing it to me now...

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you just might find
You get what you need

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
I said to him

You can't always get what you want, no
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You can't always get what you want, no
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need
You get what you need
You get what you need
You get what you need

You can't always get what you want, no
You can't always get what you want, no
You can't always get what you want

  • Thanks Ronwesley for posting this and your other videos. This choir has so much talent that they are always a pleasure to listen to.

  • I'm glad you enjoy Scala. They're a wonderful choir.

  • this is so beautiful, I heard it on Californication and I have to say it made me shiver. That's lame, I know but the original Rolling Stones version didn't do that to me. Thanks for posting this, it's great quality.

  • I'm glad you enjoy it. I should point out this is not the same song as heard on the Californication soundtrack. :-)

  • I first heard it on House.

I think it shows what great lyricists the Stones were. When you here it done a little different and then you think, "Oh that's what they meant."

  • the conductor is so entertaining.. i think i couldn't sing in this choir because i had to just start laughing all the time :D

but great song, great interpretation.. and great conductor :D

  • Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin исполнить бы им.

  • Прекрасно 64секунды.Естесственно хор должен исполнять эту песню от начала и до конца целиком сам.

  • @BrittVonKruel I heard this song on that show too.

  • Thank you Mick, thank you Keith for this fabulous song !

  • FINALLY a cover of You Can't Always Get What You Want that incorporates one of my favorite parts of the song: the choir part.

  • Love, love, love this!

  • Wow Freddie Roach is a pretty awesome singer.

  • Scala is simply amazing! To be completely honest, I'm jealous that the choir that I was a part of was never all that great... but then, who wouldn't be when compared?

  • très bonne version ! bien sur cela ne vaudra jamais le live de bruxelles en 1973 !

  • 1. Shivering is never lame (IMHO).

    2. Missing the french horn.

    3. Missing the Hammond B3.

    4. Would have been better without the guy singer.

    5. Even so ... good! :-D
