Actually there is a complex and interesting explanation to this ending. See the main character was escaping from a town to the west where he is wanted for the murder of his wife and everyone wants him dead. The beginning scene of the game is him coming off a train he sneaked on. Before I run out, the kid is from the town in the west who heard his wife scream "Shane!" before she died. The kid followed him to expose him, thats the reason why the guy killed him. The only one that knows his name.
