Since the video appears to cause some confusion and to provoke the mentally handicapped to post idiotic comments, I guess I have to write a more detalied description for the sake of clarification.
As the more intelligent viewers figured out, this is not a ballistic knife which launches a spring-loaded blade, which should be obvious, since the knife is held with the blade facing the shooter. Instead, the knife fires a silent special-purpose 7.62mm cartridge.
Currently, there are two versions of the knife, the NRS and the NRS-2. NRS stands for "nozh razvedchika strelyayushiy" and translates literally as "scout's shooting knife". The NRS has a clip-point blade and fires the 7.62x38 mm SP-3 cartridge which, in terms of muzzle energy, is comparable to the .25 ACP. The NRS-2 is a spear-point design and uses the more advanced 7.62x42 mm SP-4 round (comparable to the .32 ACP).
Due to the cartridge's unique design, the knife (or any other weapon chambered for the same round) produces almost no noise or fumes. The bullet is pushed out of the case by a piston, which, at the peak of its extension, locks the case mouth, thus trapping the gases inside and eliminating the muzzle crack. So in the end what we have is an extremely silent weapon with a muzzle energy of 90 J for the SP-3 round or 200 J in the SP-4 chambering, which is more than enough to kill at ranges of up to 20 m.

Btw, japanigro's comment that I replied to was:
"lololol that wouldn't even kill a cat, you might as well be using a pea shooter."

He deleted it for some reason.

  • I have to question the utility of this. While you *can* kill with such a weak round, you will absolutely need a head shot to do it fast enough to prevent your target from ruining your silence. And to do that with such an awkward weapon, you will have to shoot from such a short range that you might as well use the knife as a knife. The PSS pistol is quite a bit smaller and better suited to shooting instead of being a shoot/stab mutant. :-/ Cool but impractical?

  • @themomaw Most handguns require head shots for a clean kill. The SP-3 and 4 rounds are doubtlessly weak, but that's what you pay for almost perfect noise suppression. And yes, you can hit head-sized targets at ranges significantly greater than your arm's reach with the NRS, at least that's what its users say. Besides, there's no such thing as a silent kill with a knife. I understand your objections, but why not have a knife you can shoot somebody with instead of an ordinary one?

  • ThumbsUp if u see the knife =]

  • @woBsquared I read the description. Did you?

"...the 7.62x38 mm SP-3 cartridge which, in terms of muzzle energy, is comparable to the .25 ACP"

.25ACP is a weak round. In the same ballpark as.22LR. It can be mortal like any gunshot wound, but you'd have to be INSANELY lucky to kill them quickly enough to remain silent. Unless you score a head shot. Which, as I said, with such an awkward aiming system means getting so close you might as well just stab them.

  • @themomaw did you just say the 7.62 is a WEAK round?????? DID you read his describtion...He said it is deadly up to 20 meters

  • @themomaw dude its a knife that shoots bullets, i don't think the spetsnaz that came up with this was thinking far past that

  • LOL - WTF?
