In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make a Basic Sweet and Sour Sauce. This sauce may be used for Asian and other foods. A blend of rice vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, and some spices, this is a very simple way to make a zesty sauce.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup rice vinegar
4 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon soy sauce
2 teaspoons cornstarch
4 teaspoons water

In a small pot, mix together 1/3 cup rice vinegar, 4 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon ketchup, and 1 teaspoon soy sauce. In a small bowl, mix 2 teaspoons cornstarch and 4 teaspoons water until smooth. Add cornstarch mixture to the pot of sauce mixture. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly. Cook for about a minute or so, until the sauce is thickened and bubbly. Pour into a small bowl for serving. Cool until just lukewarm, or serve chilled. You can use this sauce for dipping cooked foods, like chicken fingers, pork, fish, and shrimp. It has a delightful, piquant flavor that you are sure to enjoy! --Betty 

  • Hi Betty! I love your recipes and watch you quite often. One thing I neeed to know is, where did you get the rectangle measuring spoons? I love them and I keep looking everywhere and cant find them....

  • @ladyacephoto My daughter bought those measuring spoons for me at a discount store, Gabriel Bothers in Lexington, Kentucky. It might be hard to find them now.

  • Super

  • This is the best sweet and sour sauce I've tried to date! I'm 65 and have been looking for a recipe that comes close to what they have in the Chinese Rest. I frequent and this is it! I made black pepper chicken and put your sweet and sour sauce on it and it tastes just like theirs, Thank you!

  • how can anyone criticise Betty's cooking, especially when she has such a beautiful face and saucy voice!

  • im a big fan of Betty, but when i tried this recipe,i thought it has too much of vinegar in it...

  • wow thanks a lot betty its so delicious

  • I made this yesterday & was surprised at how tasty this is, at first i kind of thought it was going to have a 'cheap' taste to it, but this is every bit as good as the stuff you get from a high class Chinese restaurant & i cant praise it highly enough, i will be sticking with this recipe... Thankyou Betty!!! The UK calls it Cornflower, USA call it Cornstarch, hope that helps anyone confused... :-)

  • thanks
