  • It might be an ignorance of a little Polish girl, but I didn't know that Hungarians and Romanians are in such a disagreement!

I had an opposite image in my soul...

I must have created it myself.

Sorry for cutting in, and this monologue :)

  • I don't think Hungarians and Romanians are in disagreement as people. In Transylvania for instance there is a fairly high rate of mixed marriages. I think both sides have their fair share of nationalist chauvinist nutcases and the rest of us just have to keep marginalizing them by pointing to shared cultural wealth, shared history and shared interests.

  • although i`m from Romania (and most of the romanian people have some stupid missbelives abot Hungary ..idiot people !!) I just can`t imagine not to love Marta ..it is a pearl in this world full of shity music ... a person so involved in deep study and documentation in folklore music ...I can only say one thing ...YHANK YOU MARTA !!!!!!you always bring me tears in my eyes ..every time !!!!

  • You are absolutely right. Bartok collected both hungarian and romanian music and Balanescu has no problem playing with hungarians: the 2 cultures were forged in Transylvania together, I wish people finally understood that and stopped the nonsense on both sides. people should stop bringing up history as an excuse for hatered.

  • Marta's haunting song szerelem is absolutely beautiful, and best known to us non hungarians. Her festive folk music almost makes you think Pieter Brueghel's depictions of happy once-a-year give-it-all dances. A friend of hungarian descent told me hungarians are profoundly xenophobic, troubling but understandable, asian hordes, attila, turkish domination for 200 years+ maybe?

  • Marta is the Amalia Rodrigues of Hungary in the sense that she placed authentic folk tradition on the map the same way Rodrigues has done with fado. Difference is that Marta sings bulgarian, romanian, hindi, english etc and promotes a culture of "back to the roots" and local communities in an open minded cosmopolitan manner. It's true that in Eastern Europe nationalism is an unfortunate reality, but what's worse there is a lot of that left simmering in the west like the USA as well.

  • It's too bad lot's of people don't know why Hungary and Romania fights. I don't see why they don't finish this ridiculousness. In my opinion, it won't change a thing. They, and everybody else, should live in peace, which we already know close to impossible. By the way Hunagry is beautiful. You must go and visit it one day. Good luck and get back to me if you wish.

  • szatmar666, tu esti un om bun! Kedves ember vagy!

  • Sebestyen Marta with Musikasz. I had the priviledge of seeing them on Margit Island in 97. It really does not get any better. I've got her autograph somewhere. I remeber my feeling of elation when I got it. Like a kid at Christmas.

  • Think about you living in a country speak your own language and one day you wake up and someone put a new passport into your hands, and try not to be as used to...can you imagine how frustrated would you be??????

  • WWI exactly

  • It goes to the heart of the issue when you say 2/3rd of Hungary. Romanians will point out that Transylvania had a large Romanian population, even the majority in 1867. I am not sure if that's true but it sure is true today. Problem with Romanians is that they behave nationalistically and lie about their own history even more than hungarians do. I think the French are a model for them and the French are historically very intolerant with minorities even though they are a freedom loving nation.

  • I was born and raised in Hungary, currently living in Canada. The "fight" between Hungary and Romania isn't really among the citizens, rahter between the governments. It's all politics. It has been ugly and probably will stay like this. Mostly it is because of Trianon (the peace contract after WWII), where Hungary lost its 2/3 of its territory. The disagreement is also true towards the Slovaks. There has been a fight over almost everything eversince... It's sad...

  • music have no frontiers . romanian and magyar (hungarians) must forgot all dissagrements and bad happenings from the past. doesn't matter what's language are you speaking. you must be HUMAN ! ( sorry for my english )
