At 40th St. and Camelback Road in Phoenix, AZ, there's a water run-off next to a man-made canal. Inside this run-off tunnel is a colony of over 5,000 Mexican Free-Tailed Bats (Tadarida brasiliensis). As the sun sets, they leave the tunnel to spend the night hunting insects. This species of bats is one of the most abundant mammals in North America, and can roost together in groups that number in the millions.
Hanging out with the bats is quite a treat! As it gets darker, the bugs tend to gather around you, providing easy targets for the bats. On several occasions I was sure a bat would run into me, only to have it swing back at the last second. Lights over the canal show the bats swooping mere inches over the water. If you can, go visit them!
The Flood Control District of Maricopa County is committed to protecting the bats. The Arizona Game and Fish Department sponsors their conservation. Their Bat Project can be reached at (602) 789-3574 or by going to www.azgfd.com
