It was the awakening, BY ITSELF. The surge had nothing to do with it. Glenn Beck is a fascist little prick. Iraq would have gotten better by itself, possibly even SOONER. A drop in violence and you assholes proclaim victory.
I am glad things have improved SOMEWHAT in Iraq. It would have happened ANYWAY. The real story is much more complicated and this simpleton has no appreciation for that. Never forget NEOCONS got us into that mess to begin with. They made us all wait it out with no plan.

You must not know anyone who serves in the military or you're just an idiot. The awakening occurred because of our continued presence and commitment to stay. As the tribes saw the US demonstrate our good intentions with action they realized that we were trying to do good vs. AQI that wanted to tear the country apart. This a world governed by the aggressive use of force. This is an undeniable truth of life.

The Anbar Awakening occurred BEFORE the surge. Had Al Qaida been more considerate for the citizens there they wouldn't have become enemies. In the conservative mind the world is governed by the aggressive use of force. There is much more to it than that, and to resort to force as the ONLY way of governing is the worst possible policy. Force is the WORST of all persuasive tools. Look that up with STALINISM.

Yes. Violence is the last resort. However, when evil is on the move, it generally doesn't give a damn about diplomacy. When an armed intruder enters your home and tries to kill you, your wife and kids, what's your plan? Talk him out of it or grow a pair and fight? How many members of your family get killed before you realize he's serious about doing you harm? You're not a violent person, but sometimes good people need to stand up and fight.
