Our 2010 Summer trek began on the glaciers of Iceland and ended on the sun-baked beaches of Cilento, two hours south of Naples, a journey that lasted 34 days, more than seven thousand kilometers throughGermany, Switzerland and Italy with scorching temperatures for most of the trip.

We enjoyed every minute of it. We loved Iceland with its glaciers, spectacular waterfalls, geysers, unspoiled nature, rugged terrain, and its gentle inhabitants. And we are considering a return trip especially after hearing people tell of the rare beauty of its fjord region on the east side of the island. Iceland's position makes it a desirable stop with its excellent connections to many European destinations.

Rekjavik, the country's capital, is a very clean, modern, and efficient city offering excellent dining and shopping opportunities along with interesting historical and architectural sites. It's really interesting to see how they take advantage of their natural resources particularly the abundance of geysers that they exploit for the production of electric power and heating.

From Iceland we continued to Frankfurt where we picked up our rental car and made a quick visit to some friends who have two young and lively girls to entertain us. We drove through Switzerland and spent the night along the shores of Lake Lucern in an overrated and overpriced hotel.

Then on to Italy. We deliberately avoided large cities and tourist attractions and concentrated on exploring dozens of small villages that offer a human connection in addition to history, art and gastronomy. We learned a great deal about food in Abruzzo that we will share in another dispatch!

The highlight of our trip was Andrea Bocelli's concert in his home town of Lajatico, not too far from Lucca and Volterra, in the recently created Teatro del Silenzio, an outdoor facility surrounded by the gentle Tuscan hillscovered with wheat fields, sunflowers, olive trees and vineyards.
