The Legacy of Rev. Dr. Elias James Jones
Rev. Dr. Jones was born on February 26, 1928 in Oneida Arkansas to the late Rev. and Mrs. J.W. Jones. Dr. Jones was the only son born out of seven children. He had three older sisters and three younger sisters.
At the age of ten, Dr. Jones accepted Christ into his life at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Popular Grove, Arkansas. He was baptized by Rev. A.L. Patterson. Dr. Jones graduated from Eliza Miller High School and later attended college in Arkansas. After arriving in Chicago in 1948 to enter into the automobile business, God began to move in his life and called him into the ministry. Rev W.L. McGee, pastor of the Christian Love Baptist Church, licensed Dr. Jones in 1948.
In 1950, Dr. Jones was ordained by the Rev. Earl Cannon with the council of the Baptist Ministers including his father Rev. J.W. Jones.
Dr. Jones served as pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for one year, Ward Memorial for seven years and First Unity Baptist Church for thirty-eight years. In the year 2000, Dr. Jones retired from active pastoral duties and was bestowed the title of Pastor Emeritus.
Dr. Jones was affiliated with many religious organizations nationally. He took an active part in the election of Dr. Henry J. Lyons as President of The National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Dr. Jones gave many Pastors and Preachers the opportunity to be heard across this country as the Chairman of the late night services of the Evangelistic Board. Dr. Jones served as a member of the Baptist General State Convention, Salem District Association, Baptist Pastor's Conference of Chicago and he was the 29th President of the Baptist
Minister's Conference of Chicago and Vicinity.
Dr. Jones was asked to preach in Jerusalem on three separate occasions. He was given a luncheon in his honor by the officials of that city. Dr. Jones had the wonderful opportunity to preach on the Mt. of Olives. What a blessing for an anointed servant of God. Dr. Jones was appointed by David Wilhelm to serve as campaign coordinator for the African American Baptist Ministers for the election of President William Jefferson Clinton.
Dr. Jones an awesome servant for God. He preached and spread the word of God on an international level. He delivered thirty-eight messages at various state conventions and district associations in many parts of this Nation. He recorded many sermons including I Hate to See the Evening Sun Go Down. Dr. Jones received many awards and recognition for his leadership, dedication and commitment. Dr. Jones was greatly influenced by his father, a great leader. He was a friend to the young and old and he never passed up an opportunity to mentor, guide and give direction to young Preachers following in his
footsteps.
Dr. Jones had family and many friends who supported him to the very end. He will be forever missed but never forgotten.
Thank You from the Family of Dr. E.J. Jones
