This video is about consumer operated service programs (COSPs) and their role in the service system. The video illustrates one example of a consumer-run program, SIDE.
SIDE is an independent non-profit, multi-service, consumer-run agency in Kansas. It provides drop-in services as well as structured peer-support and education groups, art expression, and social opportunities. The governing board and employees of SIDE are all mental health consumers.
The video highlights the story of one member, Kelly, but many members talk about what being part of a COSP means in their lives.
SIDE and the local mental health center talk about their collaborative relationship which is rewarding, as well as challenging at times. Both agencies feel they are stronger because of this relationship.
Also featured are policy makers and mental health administrators from around the country sharing their perspective about why COSPs are important and useful services. Speakers include:
Kathryn Power, Director of the Center for Mental Health Services
Arthur Evans, Director of the Philadelphia Office of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation
Melodie Riefer, a state-level consumer affairs director
Ed Knight, a Vice President at a Values Option Managed Care company
Linda Rosenberg, of the National Council of Behavioral Healthcare Centers

This is wonderful. Sometimes people are confused about what is a consumer operated program. Its the total program being goverened and run by person with lived experience.

This video is awesome and offers a personal face on the issue of why Consumer Run Organizations are so very important. It is a shame that many who participated in this video are no longer working for the system due to cuts at the State level within Kansas........Ian Boyd, Boyd Research & Advocacy Group, Emporia, KS

SIDE is one of the best peer support centers in the nation. It's right by my house. Please like our Facebook page at S.I.D.E. Peer Support Center. Funny thing, this video was made quite a long time ago.

As a Certified Peer Specialist in North Carolina, I see the evidence of recovery through peer support. I am always surprised when mental health professional doubt the power of peer support, given that some of the most effective programs (with the best long-term outcomes) have been based on peer support. AA/NA are highly effective peer supported programs that have made a difference in the lives of people that traditional treatments have not helped. Peer Power!
