And I have to put in a word for Joe Jitsu. I loved watching him as a kid. Joe was good-natured, well-mannered, reliable, imperturbable, and unfailingly polite and apologetic as he administered the smackdown to the bad guys. (I remember my brother cuffing me: So sorry! Scuse prease!). Yes Joe was a stereotype, but I think a positive one given the times, and definitely a huge step forward from the WWII period Japanese stereotypes.

Dick Tracy started as a comic strip in 1931. At that time, dick was common slang for detective. Kids wouldn't have known the other meaning.

I never got that Tracy just sits on his ass and lets the comically stereotypical sidekicks do all the dirty work. And his name is on the title of the show.

Oh my God! Dick Tracy had a gun right on his desk, Stooge Viller is smoking a cigarette, and Joe Jitsu is racist, how did I watch these cartoons when I was a kid and not become a chain smoking, gun carrying racist?? Imagine showing something like this on Sat morning now, the politically correct would burn down the tv station!
