In this video I perform a Crucial Technology Memory Upgrade on the Apple MacBook 2.4GHz White Unibody Mid 2010 model. A close-up look at how to perform the upgrade, with before and after Geekbench scores.

Crucial Technology also gave some insight into how memory upgrades can effect Mac performance...
While synthetic benchmarks are a great way to measure certain aspects, they don't always capture what the desired outcome of a memory upgrade is, being increased system performance and a better user experience. In actual use, 8GB of RAM with 64-bit operating systems allows more, and larger, applications to be run entirely from RAM at an access latency of under 20ns, whereas accessing data on the hard drive can have access latencies in excess of 4 million nano-seconds. The result being a much better user experience, snappier UI and overall increased productivity.

Check out the main Geekanoids website for more insight into memory upgrades.

  • Do I have to perform the upgrade before I start using my new macbook? Or can I upgrade the memory at some point later on down the line when I decide, and if yes will it affect the things I have saved on my macbook already?

  • @HulaKiki You can upgrade whenever you are ready.

  • @HulaKiki It shouldn't effect the files you have saved, but with any upgrade you should always backup first.

  • Hi, I have the apple macbook 2.4 Ghz white unibody, bought in january 2011, I went into the crucial and apple web pages and they both recommended a maximum of 4 Ghz... who should I trust??? (I really wish the 8gb max was possible...)Thanks

    Fernando

  • @fernandoARuiz Well, if you are unsure ring Crucial first, but 8GB worked fine in mine.

  • @fernandoARuiz Also, just double check which model you have.

  • Dave, I also have the MacBook Polycarbonate. What part of the Mac could I touch to static discharge myself since the body is made of polycarbonate?

  • i have a late 2009 white macbook unibody and was thinking about upgrading to the crucial 8gb memory? is that a good idea? is it possible?

  • @fernandoARuiz I was also unsure about this since I was thinking of upgrading my macbook (2.4 ghz) too, and the official specification listed a maximum of 4 gigs. However, if you upgrade to the latest firmware for snow leopard, the computer will register the full 8 gigs.

  • Can anyone tell me if there is a better graphics card that will fit in this mac, and if so what? Thanks in advance...

  • What kind of ram is it called? I also want to upgrade to 4GB ?

  • Do all the MacBooks come with two ram chips of 1GB? Cause I think mine has a single 2GB chip...

  • Can you give me a link to the actual memory please?

  • @NathanBrownUno

No, thats on your hard drive

  • Just ordered a 4gb upgrade but i was wondering if it would delete my files such as music ect.. thanks

  • Help me, Ive upgraded to 8GB of ram. But I want to ask, is it possible to make it 16gb? Thanks

  • @InspectorGadgetTV Just performed the upgrade to 8GB. Used an anti-static wrist strap which I connected to the copper pipe of my radiator to ground myself.
