@maitlan if you don't know what muriatic acid is, you probably shouldn't be doing this experiment as you most likely do not have the proper training.

More detailed for those newbies that ask questions if not detailed.

Complete steps always! Chemistry as they say is like a recipe if we miss a step no matter how small or repetitive it can ruin the whole outcome.

@maitlan Store bought muriatic acid.

I get a bit pissed, trying to find the names of what chemicals your using...
You could've attached them to the description. Did you say "Botmeuratic acid"?

@98JMA thanks

An aromatic compound with only one methyl alkyl group attached to the benzene ring.

um ... whats tolulene?

@morethen9000 You can use less vigourous conditions (i.e. less heat) to get the aldehyde, I'm not sure if reducing the volume of KMnO4 would affect it but I could be wrong! [=
Hi there myst32YT
A friend and I are working on a school project about food preservation and are attempting to synthesize benzoic acid.
We are attempting your synthesis and in this connection we would be happy if you could describe the entire synthesis from water, toulene, and potassium permanganate to benzoic acid and manganese dioxide. Could you also point out which reactions in the synthesis there are reversible and irreversible please :)
Thank you

@embacify So you want me to do your work for you? ;-) Potassium permanganate will convert any alpha carbon on the ring that has at least one hydrogen to a carboxylic acid. The water is just there to dissolve the permanganate. The time needed to reflux is because toulene and water do not mix... so the reaction happens at the layer boundaries. The reaction forms potassium benzoate.. the acid reacts with potassium benzoate and forms potassium chloride and benzoic acid. This last part is reversible.

I got a food preservative which is a 50:50 mixture of sodium benzoate and acetic acid . if i add some muriatic acid in the cool solution of this preservative, will it react with the sodium benzoate , which is in the preservative to form sodium chloride and benzoic acid?
just like......C6H5COONa + HCl -----> NaCl + C6H5COOH
will I get those precipitates which you got?

@bhattshivamm Correct...it should "puff out" (my term) of the solution... wash it good then dry.

When you precipitate benzoic acid, that's potassium benzoate your adding the HCl to right?

@hkparker Correct...
