thanks for sharing that...my grandparents were Amish but I never got to see anyone get dressed before. I couldn't help wondering if you've ever tried to get through airport security with all those safety pins, lol.

CliffkFF. You are quiet welcome. It is sure a task if you are not used to getting dressed that way everyday. Sometimes those straight pins have a mind of their own,ouch,lol. And no I have never tried to go through airport security. It could be very intresting.

erra. Yes what I would have given to be able to wear a dress made by the more liberal Amish. I (Fran) have a sister who is from the more liberal. She left the Swartzentruber Amish when she was a teenager and she has a beautiful family.

KateHastings. In response to your comment on the nursing. Yes it can be a real challenge. But like most of Amish women after having 6 or 12 kids I guess they get to be pro's at it. They start by undoing the side of the cape in which they want to nurse on, and than undo the dress underneath the cape, that gives them a big enough opening and lets them use the cape as a privacy cover. This is usually done in a bedroom away from a crowd, such as in church.

It took her 5 minutes to get dressed...5 minutes every day over 50 years is 95 hours of labour dedicated solely to getting dressed. I'm exhausted just watching that.

Its unbearable. Its terrible. So many clothes, so many pins. It so unpractical, like a jail. Its so tide and fit, so hot. I'm getting more angry simply by thinking of it!!!

Thank God of Greece, our tradition is much, much, much more liberal than that!!

Oh wow that looks very uncomfortable and way too hot to wear during summer. I live in Florida and you would bake in that.

The separate sleeves must be a hold over from really old style dressing. Up to the mid-19th century, sleeves were often removable. They were buttoned on, or may hooked on. Probably easier to clean, repair or replace just sleeves than an entire garment.
