@231coolas I have caught and released TONS of these in my life and only one actually squirted blood from its eyes. This one looked different than the others i had caught. The eyes seemed to swell up for awhile then it shot out about two feet from each eye. So it does indeed happen but may depend on the breed or species.

@BoyCary thats accually false. The species that need ant to survive is the thorny devil (People often get it mixed up with the horned toads for some reason). they have successfully kept and bred horned toads in the UK with a diet of crickets, meal worms etc.
Also they don't squirt blood often and it is often very hard to get them to squirt blood. They do it when they feel REALLY threatened.

@231coolas only 4 of the 14 species of horned lizrds squirt blood

Horned toads will die without a diet of ants. The particular ants in their area. If you are still near where he was caught. Then let him go. I have only been able to keep desert horned lizards in AZ one time. When I have a red ant pile in my yard to feed them from. : )
