Dirty Kung Fu (1978) is a martial arts comedy directed and choroegraphed by Lau Kar-wing (Liu Chia Yung), Lau Kar-leung's brother. This sword fight is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, this old videotape is dubbed and the image is cropped.

  • Man, I thought the Japanese were the only ones to have REAL sword arts in the East until I saw this. What style is this?

  • The movie was choreographed by Lau Kar-wing, brother of noted director Lau Kar-leung. Their family tradition was hung gar style, but they were pretty versatile.

  • Are you still writing the electric shadows blog for Kung Fu Cinema? I've absolutely loved your columns on wushu stars and Cantonese serials.

    Nice clip too :)

  • Electric Shadows will be back soon. I have to learn the new software at Kung Fu Cinema. I'm glad you like the movie clip!

  • the king of all weapons.

  • not exactly the same sword but the same style of sword used with the same techniques.

  • and a decent advise

fencing for a year gives you nothing, believe me.

I was fencing half a year and I was thought of as best student in a decade.... But I stopped fencing then. Started looking up many different styles and seeing dozens maybe hundreds of weapons in action, that is when you learn that you know nothing, and you start to chose a style that is suitable for you. Knowing one weapon makes your knowledge very limited, learn with more different ones, you will grow then.

    Have a nice day:)

There are many styles and weapons you have to be prepared for. Some styles prefer minimal distance fight, using for example daggers, knives or butterfly swords, Hung Gar has for example (aside of many weapons) even a form of fight with a chair. There are weapons like chain whips that get through cover urnless you cover them with two weapons and you need to make a step to dodge them... etc etc.

And here we get to the way they move, well the way they are getting past themselves they are trying to get to the other's back so that they would have greater chance of successful attack. With weapons like this it is much more effective. Also when you are fighting various weapons you cannot stand in line short spear is longer AND faster than rapier AND MANY TIMES MORE POWERFUL, but the longer the weapon is, the less mistakes you can make. And there are many weapons.....

Straight line fight was a duel only style of fight done mostly with rapiers and rarely with sabers, because with these dodges to side were too slow to be of any help - when you attack by rotation of hand it is different than if you swing with whole arm (but the impact is different as well). I could also mention one Englishman who travelled through Italy in 17th century and challenged all italian masters - he was in a ringmail with shortsword and shield - and always won .

  • Ah, very well I got to this video quite late to be of much help, simply said, even in Europe there were two types of schools of fencing: defensive and offensive, you're learning the defensive one which features fighting at distance that gives you enough of time to react. The offensive schools were trying to do "magic" (much more than these ones - Chinese had brain) , but a single mistake would place the one who does the offensive school into a position where he could easily be killed.

  • Imagine if those were fighting with light sabers, that would be ill.

  • Is that the sword from crouching tiger?

  • This one of the best sword fights ever.
