LANGKAWI, MY - A man was found floating aimlessly in the waters of Pantai Cenang in Langkawi, Malaysia, on 28 December 2009 at around 6.30pm. Witness Nor Shafarina said she first noticed an unusual object in the sea, about a mile away from the beach, while she was on board the private sea vessel Damai Indah. She then informed the vessel's owner Eva Zimmermann, also on board at the time, who later confirmed the floating object to be that of a man. He had no life support equipment on him. Zimmermann took off on a dinghy to inspect and later found that the man was alive, albeit exhausted and shirevelled up from being out at sea for too long.
"At first, the man didn't react to my calls. I feared he might be dead. But after a while, he answered me and I took him unto the dinghy," said Zimmermann. Upon questioning, it was revealed that the unidentified man had been a guest at one of the resorts on Pantai Cenang. He was swimming in the ocean when the ocean currents drifted him away and he had been trying to get to shore ever since. However, it wasn't clear long he had been floating at sea. He is suspected to be a Middle Eastern or Caucasian male in his mid-30's.
Zimmermann, an experienced sailor and director of Blue Water Star Sailing in Langkawi, continued to comment: "He was indeed very far out at sea. If it had been 20 minutes later, we wouldn't even have been able to see him there. It was getting dark and let's not even talk about what might've happened if he was stung by a jellyfish out there. He'd probably be dead."
