A doubting Ian Chesterton challenges the Doctor as to whether the TARDIS has indeed travelled through time. The opening of the doors of the time machine reveals not the junkyard of 76 Trotter's Lane, but a Palaeolithic landscape of another world. Classic clip taken from the very first Doctor Who story, An Unearthly Child starring William Hartnell. Thanks so much!

  • Remember loving this as a kid when it was shown in 1981 as part of the "five faces" season.

  • Now i want to watch classic Who.

  • @mollytherealdeal sorry?

  • Don't worry, Doctor, you'll get used to it soon enough XD

  • @1969captainron He said:"It's still a police box! Why hasn't it changed? Dear dear, how very disturbing!"

  • The real reason that the TARDIS did not change is because Doctor Who did not have a big budget in the early episodes Later producers could afford to have a TARDIS that did transform, but the public expected it to remain a police box. During the Colin Baker incarnation of the Doctor, the Chameleon Circuit was fixed temporarily.

  • @Endomorth And the BBC wanted a symbol for doctor who. They couldn't symbolise something that changed every episode

  • Haha all is so adorably retro ^^

  • I wonder if the TARDIS Chameleon circuit really did go bad, or if the TARDIS decided that Ian needed at least some continuity of some kind, so opted to overload the circuit. Ha!
