Sarah Dunant's Sacred Hearts was performed for one night only at Manchester Cathedral as part of the 2011 edition of the Manchester Literature Festival. The drama takes place in 1570 in the convent of Santa Caterina, in the northern Italian city of Ferrara. It tells the story of Serafina, a hot-headed 16 year old condemned to convent life for a forbidden flirtation with an unsuitable man, and the scholarly Zuana resigned to a similar fate following the death of her father. Their triumphs and defeats as they struggle to adapt to the rigid lifestyle are vividly portrayed in this moving story.
The performance was filmed and edited by Cornerhouse as part of the Arts Council funded Broadcast project.
